Google & Facebook Want You Over: How They Plan to Keep You Hooked

Both Google and Facebook are trying to win your loyalty now, and they’re going to great lengths

to do so. Their strategies are different from each other, but their goal remains the same: keep you

coming back day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year. The more time

you spend using their products, the more money they make in ad revenue, and the more opportunity

they

have to personalize their products around your preferences.

The Role of Technology in Our Lives:

Technology is an integral part of our lives. We use it for everything from listening to music and watching TV, to checking our bank balance and reading the news. It's a big part of how we communicate with friends and family too, whether through email or texting. But how much do we really know about the companies that are shaping how we live? What does their future look like? And what's being done about privacy concerns? Let's take a closer look at two of the most influential
players in the tech world - Google and Facebook. Both have been around for years now, but it's easy to forget just how powerful they are. Google has over 88% market share of search engine traffic worldwide; Facebook claims more than 2 billion monthly active users.

For all the public attention given to both these companies' unprecedented dominance on different fronts, surprisingly little is said about their near-term future plans (and even less about how they might be affecting us). So what can you expect in the next few years? The main question is whether or not they will merge as some analysts predict, so here’s what each company has been saying recently. At Recode's Code Conference last month, Google CEO Sundar Pichai was asked by Walt Mossberg if he sees any possibility of partnering with Facebook on AI research. I think we need to think hard about this, Pichai responded. I'm not sure if we can do this. That response suggests that despite already running numerous joint research projects with Facebook on machine learning, artificial intelligence, and other areas, Pichai doesn't see things going much further than they currently are between the two giants.

How Google Wants to Win You Over:

It's no secret that Google and Facebook are on a never-ending quest for our attention. The next few
years will be crucial in determining which company wins out, so let's take a look at how they plan to
keep you hooked.
Facebook has done an excellent job of making sure you never have time for anything else.
It's not just the endless feed of pictures and status updates from your friends, it's also all the other
ads that are fighting for your attention as well. For example, if you type booty into the search bar on
Facebook, one of the sponsored links is Bootylicious Beyonce. So whether or not you're looking for
Beyonce's latest album or some new jeans, there will always be something enticing popping up in your
newsfeed. As if this wasn't bad enough, now Facebook wants to know everything about who we talk to
and what we post online by connecting us with their app Whatsapp. All we can say is let them fight!

How Facebook Wants to Win You Over:

Facebook is a social media site that has over 2 billion users. This makes it the most popular
social media site in the world, and it has been a major player since 2006. As such, they need to keep
for them to keep you hooked on their site.
Facebook knows that people are looking for different ways to find content with which they can identify.
That is why they have an algorithm designed to show you content based off of your interests and
what you like, as well as the interests of those in your network.
This way, they can not only make sure that you are getting updates from family members and friends
but also from pages or organizations with which you share common values or interests.

What We Can Do to Resist:

Many people have become dependent on Google and Facebook for information, communication, and
even monetary transactions.
This is concerning because it's so hard to resist the pull of these platforms. Let's take a look at some
ideas for resisting.
-Put your phone away when you're with friends or family. Check your phone as infrequently as possible,
or
not at all if you can help it.
